On July 6, 1993, Pope John Paul II declared Marianists Carlos Eraña, Fidel Fuidio, and Jesús Hita “venerable”; the pope beatified these same brothers on October 1, 1995. All three of these holy men were martyred in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War and are known as the “Marianist Martyrs of Ciudad Real.”
In celebration of their continued journey to canonization, we recommend utilizing the work by Fr. Emilio Ortega, SM, The Blesseds Carlos, Jesús, Fidel, Marianists, a compilation of individual biographies that traces the life of each brother from his humble beginnings growing up in a working-class family to his deep faith, apostolic involvement in Marianist schools, and execution as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Key to the stories of Carlos, Jesús, and Fidel is their humanity and how God called them to become disciples and instruments for religious education. Join us in learning more about and praying for the canonization of the Marianist Martyrs of Ciudad Real.
