Brother Steve Glodek gave this keynote address at the Province of Cincinnati Assembly in Dayton, Ohio, on June 17, 1995. Framed by the scripture and images of the wedding feast at Cana (John 2:10), he explores the relationship of Marianist laity and Marianist religious men and women–at how, working together, the end projects will be "better and greater than either community could have accomplished without the collaboration."

The point of this little fantasy Scripture excursion is that we Marianist religious have been for some years in somewhat of a Cana quandary about who owns this dynamic gift to the Church that we call "the Marianist charism." Does it belong to the religious congregations of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate and the Society of Mary and is somehow dispensed to the lay communities, and they are formed by us into it? Or does this gift called the Marianist charism belong to the Marianist Family and become evident to the Church and the world through a variety of particular lifestyles? The thesis of this afternoon's reflections will be that the latter is true. The Marianist charism exists for the sake of the world and the Church, like the wine at Cana existed for the sake of the wedding feast; this new wine of the Marianist charism is brought to the guests at the wedding by Jesus, by Mary, by the servants, by the steward, and by the bride and groom. Each participating in the miracle according to his or her proper role at the party!
